About markup

What is mapanno markup?

It is an easy to use online application that can be used for the discussion, commenting and feedback of images, graphics, web pages or text documents.

Interacting with mapanno markup is less formal than filling out web forms and provides a greater visual context to what is being discussed or commented on.

The best way to see what markup can do is by pasting the URL to a resource already on the web such as an image(jpg, gif, png), web page (htm, html, php, asp etc) or plain text file (txt) into the text box below:

Or, you can view these examples:

Although you can use your own images, pages etc there is also a growing library of ready-templates which you can use as a starting point for your own markup:

Who can view my markup content?

When you create a markup document you will be provided with a unique URL that links directly to your document. Anyone you provide the link too can then open the document and add markers without logging in.

Links to markup documents are not propogated through search engines or published anywhere on this site. The only way to make your markup document public knowledge is to explicitly publish it on the web yourself or use the social booking tools under the 'link' panel to expose its prescence.

Like with any information published to the web it is possible that someone could guess the link to your document. There are options to permantly hide comments added to your markup documents from anyone other than yourself if required. You can also password protect your remote document at server level if required i.e. people would need to log onto your server to view the document your were discussing. The data sent to and from mapanno is as normal http web traffic and is not encrypted with SSL so its not advised to use mapanno for anything you consider sensitive or confidential.
